Cintas Announces 2022 America’s Best Restroom® Contest Finalists | New

CINCINNATI–(BUSINESS WIRE)–August 1, 2022–

From one of the nation’s busiest airports to a restaurant in a former manufacturing building, Cintas Corporation (NASDAQ: CTAS), is proud to announce the top 10 finalists for America’s Best Restroom of 2022 ® competition. The 21st annual competition celebrates companies that develop and maintain innovative sanitary facilities. Until August 31, the public is invited to vote for their favorite finalist on bestrestroom.com.

“This year’s Top 10 finalists include companies large and small across various categories competing for the title of America’s Best Restroom,” said Julia Messinger, chief marketing officer at Cintas. “The public has higher standards when it comes to cleanliness and the technology used in public washrooms, which is why we’re proud to recognize those companies who maintain clean and exceptional facilities.”

The 10 finalists for America’s Best Toilets 2022 include (in alphabetical order):

  • Delaware Botanical Gardens – Dagsboro, DE
Just a few miles from the beaches of southern Delaware, an oasis of tranquility and beauty has been steadily cultivated at the Delaware Botanical Gardens at Pepper Creek. Designed by local firm SEA Studio Architects, the new toilets sit gently on the threshold between the Meadow Garden and the Woodlands. The building combines contemporary forms and a thoughtful material palette in a structure that both enhances the landscape and fulfills its function as a fully accessible washroom. Natural cedar siding makes the building feel like home, while floor-to-ceiling south-facing windows provide natural light and transparency in what are typically stuffy private spaces. Several educational features on the exterior demonstrate simple rainwater management practices, including a rainwater harvesting cistern and rain chains that feed a ‘living wall’, a dry river bed and a rain garden. Finally, interiors feature a clean, contemporary look with modern tile finishes and floating stainless steel vanities. Without a doubt, the toilets at DBG are very much part of the unique garden experience.
  • Eberly – Austin, TX
The entire design of the restaurant is centered around its cedar tavern bar, imported from New York, and the restrooms are also a nod to the bygone era when these bars were all the rage. Each booth has an illuminated old-fashioned New York Tavern Vacancy Light on the outside of the door that turns off when you lock it. The restroom features images by Grammy-winning music photographer Alan Messer. It is also awash in Fine Paints of Europe’s Hollandlac Brilliant Paint in Dark Cobalt Blue.
  • Headlands Lodge and Spa – Pacific City, OR
Headlands Lodge was designed to highlight its special location on the Oregon Coast, and the same goes for its restrooms. It features a wave-shaped dark concrete sink with touchless faucets. Dark paneling lines the walls with modern wall sconces to match the spa feel of the restroom. Meanwhile, patterned floor tiles create a rustic, masculine tone.
  • The Patisserie – Charleston, South Carolina
Located inside the Bennett Hotel, this French-themed patisserie’s restrooms are the closest you’ll get to France without jumping on a plane. Chic wallpaper with gold accents and elegant wall sconces are as appealing to the eye as the sweet and savory pastries in the bakery. Above, decadent chandeliers light the way to fully enclosed private booths.
  • Newark Liberty International Airport Terminal B Male and Female Restrooms – Newark, NJ
This project provides for a new restroom installation in a 1970s terminal departure lounge area at Newark Liberty International Airport that was needed due to the insufficient capacity of the existing restrooms. The lavatory design provides an exceptional experience for all passengers by eliminating the traditional fusion of washroom facilities through gender-based separation in favor of public environments that allow privacy for all users. An added benefit of this all-gender solution was the ability to accommodate a greater number of users than a traditional toilet configuration, with “potty parity” for all. Waiting areas for fellow travelers and rearrangement of passengers are provided to complement the private areas. Local imagery, integrated into the architectural treatment of glass and tile, establishes a sense of place to remind users of where they may have visited or what they might want to experience on a return trip. Sound and smell complement the visual experience to create a soothing environment.
  • No. 5 Bistro & Bar – Sedalia, Missouri
Housed in a restored 55,000 square foot building dating back to the 1800s, No. 5 Bistro & Bar is a vibrant environment colored by attentive and friendly service. The ambiance of the restaurant pays homage to the unique history of Sedalia’s Original Plat neighborhood and is truly only where their town began. The deep history of the building is evidenced in the washrooms which are fitted with the original sinks, exposed brick and floor tiles. Dramatic green subway tiles and wall sconces bring a modern touch paired with vintage mirrors. The washrooms are a beautiful combination of the historic past of the building mixed with the experiential living of the modern 21st century.
  • North Hollywood Recreation Center – North Hollywood, CA
The self-cleaning toilets at the North Hollywood Recreation Center deliver on their promise in a community with a large homeless population. They significantly reduce maintenance cleaning times. The inside of the toilet is automatically disinfected after a set number of flushes. Touchless features include a toilet paper dispenser, soap dispenser, faucet and hand dryer. Leaving the toilet is also contactless. Graffiti is easily removed from the stainless steel and porcelain interior. An alarm will sound if someone tries to stay inside for too long and the door will open.
  • Stone Mountain Public House – Stone Mountain, GA
Located in the charming historic village of Stone Mountain, GA, this restroom follows a fun, forbidden theme. The sink is made from an old whiskey barrel and features a beer tap handle for dispensing water. The vinyl wood walls are adorned with prohibition images. There’s even a butler toilet paper dispenser.
  • Tampa International Airport – Tampa, Florida
Tampa International Airport’s Airside C features a spacious, high-design new restroom paired with quality craftsmanship and an attractive, yet durable material palette. The entrance welcomes travelers to their unique Florida experience. Boasting large graphics and a deep blue natural stone, the undulating veining is reminiscent of waves crashing along the shore. Once inside, large-format tiles cover the floors and fold the walls seamlessly, reinforcing the well-lit environment and promoting a “freshly cleaned” aesthetic. A wood-look wall tile adds warmth and softness for a balanced resort feel. The luxurious feel is enhanced by high-resolution images of quintessential Florida flora printed on floor-to-ceiling sheets of shatter-resistant glass, ensuring its beauty for years to come. The clean, contemporary aesthetic is complemented by light-colored solid-surface vanities, which incorporate TPA’s signature “cockpit” concept. This “cockpit” provides guests with their own sensor-activated sink and soap, personal paper towel dispensers and trash can, all at their fingertips!
  • Tori Tori – Orlando, Florida
Inspired by the famous green toilets from “The Aviator”, the Tori Tori toilets will have other facilities green with envy. The space is gorgeous with dark green hues and light touches of marbling. The rotating floral display behind the restroom doors makes it the perfect place to take selfies and mirror photos. Mirrors and faucets with gold accents complement the green decor.

The top 10 finalists were selected based on cleanliness, visual appeal, innovation, functionality and unique design elements. The winner will be honored with a place in America’s Best Restroom Hall of Fame and will receive a Cintas UltraClean ® restroom cleaning service and $2,500 in Cintas restroom installation or cleaning services.

Last year, Two Cities Pizza in Mason, Ohio won America’s Best Restroom for its restrooms designed to capture the atmosphere of New York and Chicago. The restrooms are fully equipped with a subway platform, train car, station stops playing on the loudspeaker, authentic subway handles above the sinks, and even graffiti on the walls.
