Fantastic rooftop on Serif and The Line Hotel

Union City, California – (July 21, 2022) – Sunflower has been a manufacturer of commercial landscape products for over 30 years, and has become the premier provider of product solutions for rooftops, decks, streetscapes, public institutions and hospitality projects in the national scale.

On a triangular block in downtown San Francisco sits the new mixed-use, residential and hotel building of Serif and The Line Hotel, where three neighborhoods meet – the Tenderloin, South of Market and Union Square. The historic Warfield Theater shares the block with this 12-story triangular-shaped building. It contains a vast exterior roof and we were delighted when Handel specified numerous Tournesol products to enhance the design.

When the design and conception of the new facade of this building began, Handel Architects, LLC, was challenged by the irregularly shaped triangular building, as well as the masonry and context of the surrounding structures. They wanted the facade to retain the look and feel of the neighborhood while modernizing it and maintaining an urban, contemporary design.

Most of the roof space of the building is furnished with Kitsap Modular Metal Planter Walls. Kitsap features modular metal steel planter walls that bolt together, allowing for a huge range of planter options to sculpt the space. Additionally, they chose to finish the Kitsap walls in weathering steel (steel that rusts but retains its structural strength). Custom Kitsap walls have been designed with curved areas to encompass fireplaces, corners, and long linear lengths – some at 130’W and 36″H.

Our Wally collection wooden benches and platform seats were fitted along the sides of specific Kitsap wall planters – the longest of the four benches at 28′. Handel has also chosen many sizes of our made-to-order rectangular products. Wilshire-Collection planters, our most popular and versatile planter. Also added are our Urban Collection square and round planters. Wilshire and Urban, made from lightweight FRP, have been finished in our smooth texture and standard Puddle colour.

The roof is a pleasant outdoor space where residents and their guests can gather to create a community, small spaces for privacy and the entire roof terrace with views of downtown San Francisco, Market Street, San Francisco Bay and other neighborhoods.
