The University of Massachusetts hosted its first annual on-site recruiting event on Wednesday at the Hampshire Dining Commons starting at 11 a.m. at 18 o’clock. Another hiring event will take place on Thursday.

The hallway inside the Hampshire Dining Commons greeted its visitors with a table full of paperwork, a UMass banner hanging from the table, and a sign saying ‘welcome’ in different languages.

Standing behind the table were three students ready to assist applicants with any questions or concerns. Amanda Pamphile, a junior major in public health, was one of the students working on the event.

“There haven’t been a lot of people here, but there are people who come to fill out the paperwork and get interviews with the managers,” Pamphile said.

The event was designed to streamline the dining hall hiring process. The candidates obtained an on-site interview with a manager and the possibility of being hired on the spot.

In order to get an interview, applicants had to present government-issued identification and complete the necessary documents. Anyone interested in applying can also take documents home and fill them out at their convenience.

“This is a great opportunity for students to find a job as it is quite convenient to come for an interview on site,” said Emma Viglas, a psychology and business major who attended the event.

Hiring events are, in part, an effort to funnel workers to dining halls who are struggling to keep their facilities staffed. UMass mess halls have experienced labor shortages this semester, with a limited number of workers to feed a huge body of students.

Simon Stevenson, senior director of training and compliance program development at UMass, assisted in these recruiting efforts. As a result of this hiring event, “We were able to expedite the background checks that people have to undergo,” Stevenson said.

“We had more applicants looking for full-time jobs than student applicants,” he added.

The event was advertised throughout campus and on social media accounts such as their Instagram page @umassdining and their UMass Dining Facebook page.

“Overall it has been a very positive experience with a lot of people generating interest,” Stevenson said.

Another on-site recruiting event will be held Thursday at the Berkshire Dining Commons starting at 11am. at 18 o’clock
