Independence Stay Hotel and Long Term Suites now open for business in Houghton

HOUGHTON, Mich. (WLUC) – A brand new 28-room hotel with long-term suites has opened in Houghton following a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The Independence Stay Hotel has two floors of suites available for short stays or longer stays.

“We are a long-term suite hotel, and you can stay as long as you want,” said hotel general manager Aimee Peryam. “It could be a month, it could be a year, it could be two years.”

The business and suites are equipped for guests looking to stay long-term, including being pet-friendly.

“So we have a guest laundry and we also have a fitness room,” Peryam continued. “All of our rooms offer fully equipped kitchens, so you can have the comforts of home along with the conveniences of hotel.”

Rates vary by suite and length of stay. For example, a king suite is $125 for a single night but $85 for consecutive nights.

The hotel was built by Moyle Real Estate and Development, who have built many hotels across UP and beyond.

Having built similar hotels before, chairman Andy Moyle said he knew it was something visitors to the area needed.

“I believe this hotel fills a great need in the area,” Moyle said. “It’s just an addition to what we already have. We have a lot of great hotels and a lot of great restaurants, but we have a lot of people who have to spend the night here who don’t want to live in a hotel room and have to go to a restaurant every night.

But for it to succeed, it must have long-term visitors.

“It doesn’t work in all markets,” Moyle continued. “You have to have people who have longer stays who will be living in the hotel for 3 or 4 days, 3 or 4 weeks, 3 or 4 months, and they just want a different alternative.”

A celebration for the opening of the hotel took place after the inauguration ceremony.
