London’s new hotel that looks like a private club
Just a six-minute walk from Buckingham Palace, The Guardsman has all the smart sophistication, privacy, and personalized service of an exclusive members-only club.
From the ground floor, The Guardsman, a member of the prestigious Preferred Hotels & Resorts portfolio, does not look like your typical hotel. Tucked away in peaceful Vandon Street, just south of St James’s Park and within walking distance of some of London’s most popular landmarks, the purpose-built building is chic (but understated) outfitted in gray and gold geometric accents and looks more like a new luxury residence than your standard London hotel – and that’s precisely the point. The Guardsman is designed to be a home away from home and the perfect London base for discerning travelers.
The new boutique hotel, which had a smooth opening in October 2020 and has just reopened in accordance with the new regulations, is made up of 53 individually styled rooms, but the hotel’s USP is made up of the six residences. ultra-swish, which occupy the top three floors of the eight-story building. Equipped with one, two or three bedrooms, each residence has plenty of space with state-of-the-art living and dining areas and kitchens. Many residences also offer an outdoor space, with the main room, the Astor suite, with its own panoramic terrace with views over Westminster.
Named after Anglo-American politician Lady Nancy Astor, whose image adorns the walls, The Astor Suite reflects the neighborhood as the current and historic seat of government. The Houses of Parliament and Buckingham Palace are a short walk away.
The atmosphere at The Guardsman is unmistakably modern British with Richard Tomlin at Tonik Associates responsible for stylish design; mood lighting by Tom Dixon; and toiletries from the ever charming Noble Isle. The floors are covered with sophisticated herringbone and quirky contemporary art can be described as Elizabethan and modern.
One of the most beautifully dressed public spaces (of which there are several) is the hotel’s bar and restaurant located on the lower ground floor. Rising up a golden spiral staircase, the bar-restaurant is a beautifully decorated, intimate space whose gleaming appearance is only surpassed by its purpose: food and service are a pleasure. If you’re lucky enough to have Jana as your bartender, ask for her personalized whiskey-meet-pineapple-meet-champagne concoction, which she crafted as a tribute to the Preferred Hotel & Resorts brand, as the logo is a pineapple. Modern British cuisine is also worth mentioning: don’t skip on homemade bread, straight out of the oven and infused with (what else?) Fresh pineapple.
The Guardsman is just one of many new openings for Preferred Hotels & Resorts, the world’s largest independent hotel brand. The group is set to open 15 new properties around the world this year, including another hotel in the British capital, The Londoner in Leicester Square, which will open in September 2021.
