Santorini’s Vasilicos Caldera Heritage Suites on CNT’s 2022 Gold List

The Vasilicos Caldera Heritage Suites, Santorini

The Vasilicos Caldera Heritage Suites on the Greek island of Santorini have been included on Condé Nast Traveler (CNT) Gold List for 2022.

The “Gold List” is CNT’s edition of The best hotels in the world – classics that have forged their reputation and outlook over the years, or more recent favorites that have emerged fully formed. The list includes the city’s big hitters and safari greats, island seaside getaways and jungle haunts, from Australia to the Caribbean, from Hong Kong to LA.

The Vasilicos is the only Greek hotel – and one of 12 in Europe – on CNT’s Gold List for 2022.

“Formerly the home of an avid art collector, The Vasilicos is a boutique hotel like no other. Years of carefree vacationing as a blissful summer home have given it an air of laid-back luxury that permeates every little detail, ”CNT said Rachel howard said when describing the property.

It was built in the 1980s by Vassilis Valambous, a Greek art collector and bon vivant, from a group of yposkafa – the unique cave houses of the island.

“The atmosphere always has the warmth, privacy and personality of a home,” Howard says.

Perched high on Santorini’s caldera, The Vasilicos is made up of a constellation of cave-like structures – typical of Santorini’s architecture – that have been transformed into seven spacious and elegant suites. Large terraces, stunning sunset views, and a rare level of privacy make it special.

Furnished with unique pieces, made to order or handpicked from the family’s private collection, the history of the property can be seen in every carefully preserved detail.

Recycled key chains, personalized beach towels, and a capsule library in each suite are all appreciated, but the big winner is the ten-person Vasilicos team who work tirelessly to make guests feel right at home.

The hotel also has a sister cellar – the Vassaltis vineyards – on the island, therefore its cuisine is carefully designed around the famous wines of Santorini.

A sunset dinner on the private terrace is an experience not to be missed.
