Women’s basketball fights hard on day one of Springhill Suites Tip-off tournament
WASHINGTON, Pa. (Nov. 19, 2021) – Down 15 of four to 3 points by Maddie goodman, the Denison University women’s basketball team struggled six points behind the Presidents twice in the fourth quarter before finally falling by a final score of 58-46 to Washington and Jefferson College in the first day of the Springhill Suites Tip-off tournament.
It was a botched first quarter as the two teams combined for more turnovers (9) than goals scored (6), and both teams shot 25 percent or less both from the field and from 3 points. .
However, the second quarter was even more difficult for the Big Red as they returned the ball on three of their first four possessions and seven times in total while watching W&J build a 16-point lead 30-14 with two minutes. before half-time.
The Presidents shot over 50 percent (9-16) from the field in the second quarter while the Big Red was a combined 7 for 38 (18.4 percent) from the field in the first half.
Denison, however, looked to turn things around in the second half with just over four minutes in the third quarter, a 3-point par Gabby Elliott assisted by Hannah wynn made it a 10-point game at 32-22, then a layup of Abigail Westmeyer halfway through the quarter, it’s 32-24.
With a minute and a half to go in the third quarter, Goodman hit his third 3 point pointer of the game to bring Denison down to single digits again at 38-29, then Goodman started the fourth quarter with another 3 point pointer. to make it only a six-point game at 38-32.
Sadly, W&J seemed to have an answer almost every time Denison reduced his deficit to single digits.
With seven and a half minutes to go, another 3 points by the Big Red, this time by Francesca Sileo, made it a six-point game again at 42-36, and then Sileo scored three more, this time with just under three minutes to go to make it a seven-point game at 50-43.
In the last minute, Wynn scored 3 points to bring Denison down to single digits at 54-46.
The Big Red finished the fourth quarter shooting 4-8 of three, but that wasn’t enough to come back as W&J again shot 50 percent from the field.
Goodman finished 5 for 10 on the field and 4 for 7 of three, while Sileo finished with 10 points after shooting 50 percent both on the field (4-8) and on three (2-4 ).
Westmeyer finished with a high of 12 rebounds while Mikaïla Charpentier added eight and Wynn and Goodman both had six.
Now the Big Red will face Case Western Reserve University in the Springhill Suites Tip-off tournament consolation game at 1 p.m. on Saturday, November 20.
